Validating your HTML is good practice for a number of reasons, one of those is that many believe that valid HTML is a ranking factor in SEO, it's likely if that's correct it's not a major player but I think it makes sense to at least have some effect.
Generally speaking I have also found that 100% valid HTML will be smaller/faster loading than invalid HTML.
Another thing to keep in mind is that many of the things that make your HTML invalid may be quite serious in other browsers, you don't want users who use a different browser than you to land on your site and it's a complete mess. In most cases it would not be a complete mess but it can definitely cause visual issues.
