I am using WhatsApp and kik right now they are good. There are many more apps like skype, snapchat, line, wechat etc.

It depends on what the majority of your friends/family are using. Mine use facebook's messenger so I use that mostly. Kinnda hate the fact that it doesn't have a web feature available.
Personally I like Google Hangouts the best.

My favorite is Whats app and facebook. Most of my friends/family use it, so thats the cheapest way to get in touch with them. Works for me I guess, though I dont like facebook that much, but oh well, it keeps me in contact with the people I care about, so thats why I use it.
