One of the companies I host sites with provides a way to upload directly from my computer to an ftp space. I don't need an ftp software on my computer to do that. In a way it's a similar concept; for their ftp I can even see the files of my computer on their website. It's a java based program.

I don't know, but I just find it easier to use Filezilla in uploading your website than using the host's web based application.

I also use filezilla for all of my sites - it´s great BUT:

- there was a point I really got angry because I noticed the failure way too late. It can´t handle ö´s and ü´s and that stuff. If you connect on a server where files are with other charset you will not see them. My problem was I transferred a site for a client and everything looked fine for the first second. Then there had been files missing. I checked the old and the new server and all the files had been the same on both sides but the clients wordpress installation used files that hadn´t been there.

I logged in with the hosters webftp and all files named with other charset appeared. This costs me a bunch of time (including the calls from the angry client...)

I don't often have to use FileZilla or any SOFTP client. I generally work on ST3 or Notepad++. Both of them have awesome plugins that facilitate FTP/SFTP functions right from the board.
Isn't it easy to have your site uploaded by just pressing [Ctrl]. Bam ! the file you just edited was uploaded.
