If you build something custom and do all the coding, you have to build from scratch (or use a framework). I've done several of these and it takes a lot of time.

I built a site based on a UK search engine home page. The finished result was really nice. I liked how it turned out. But it took so much time, even working from what they'd done. It was way more than simply modifying an existing theme. As for building something from scratch, I've done it a few times, but nothing very elaborate and it's been several years since.

I think it takes more time because of wanting a wider browser support for the css3 and valid html. Also when you code from scratch you learn a lot more then copying code and pasting, I have coded a few sites from scratch in notepad and i'm glad I did I was proud with the outcome. Did you ever build an HTML site from scratch?

I have made many websites and also just templates I released completely from scratch, it's a great way to work although takes more time than you actually need to put in with all of the free front-end frameworks available such as bootstrap.

I make all my templates from scratch as I find building it from scratch always provides a better outcome. Once you gain more knowledge in coding it from scratch then you can achieve what you want much faster - although a good design can never be rushed in my opinion,
